Building Your Social Media Presense Online

Social media has been around for a few years now, and lots of our customers are using it to great effect to promote their businesses.

Whether you're a Twitter addict or completely new to social networking, there are lots of easy steps you can take to make the most of this free marketing opportunity.

Set up a Facebook page

If you haven't got a Facebook page, this is a good place to start. It's probably the single easiest way to market your café, restaurant or store online. There's a full guide to setting up your first page here. For your Facebook page to be an effective tool, your customers need to know it exists. Setting up a Twitter account

Twitter requires a bit of perseverance. People typically sign up, tweet a few times, and then feel like nothing is happening. Yet Twitter is a real gift for businesses, because it allows them to connect with customers, other businesses, and influential people in their area.

It's really easy to set up a Twitter account, just enter your details here. Once you're all set up, use the search bar to look for people in your area. Select 'Near You' on the left, add anyone who might be interested in your services, and wait for them to 'follow back'!

Fill your Facebook page and Twitter feed with brilliant content

The thing that really brings a Facebook page or Twitter feed to life is content. Make sure everything you share on Facebook tells your story. If you sell fresh, tasty food, it's a good idea to share mouth-watering pictures of it. If you offer a great local service- such as hotdogs at a convenience store- post a picture of one of your customers enjoying the product. Anything colourful and visually striking works well, and videos are even better!

Don't forget to update your customers on any new offers, changes to your opening hours, or special events.

Publicise special events

The Booker Wholesale Facebook page is the place to go for deal alerts, information on new product launches, and business tips. But did you know some of the content might also be useful to share on your own page?

This year we've made special banners for Burn's Night and Valentine's Day that you can use on your own page. They have simple messages, such as 'We have Valentine's specials, ask us for details', so a wide range of businesses can use them.

Simply save the image to your computer, then upload to your Facebook page. Keep an eye out for our Mother's Day banner, coming soon.

Don't forget G+

Google +, the 'new kid on the social network block', is worth a look, because content posted here can improve your search rankings. This means that if someone searches for your business in Google, it can be more likely they'll find you if you have a G+ account.

Measure your impact

If you're investing significant time and energy in social media, you need to be sure it's working for you. After all, you probably have a hundred other things that you could be doing.
