Bees

In August 2018 we installed three bee hives at our Hatfield Regional Distribution Centre. We introduced 6,000 bees initially which in the first summer grew to a colony of over 150,000.

Colleagues at the site care for the hives after being trained by the local Bee Keepers Association and take great pride in the success of their hives. The first year the hives produced 40 jars of honey. Working with local bee keepers we will be able to support an increase in the local bee population and help to prevent their decline as bees are under threat and very important to the environment and food supplies.

Wild Orchids

One of our Makro branches has four species of rare orchids growing in the grass verge. This grass area supports bees, butterflies and other pollinating insects which are all essential parts of the chain that supply the food sold in our branches. We are now working alongside the local Wildlife Trust to protect the area and keep it as wild as possible.
